The bed is the central point in any bedroom, creating a cozy environment that makes getting out of bed impossible. This is made more difficult when your bed is decorated with luxurious bedding, comfy pillows, stylish cushions, and throws, according to Joanna Ross, General Manager of Design at Sheridan.
It’s good that we’ve spoken with the top experts in U.K. bedding to help you dress your bed to impress, and we also share extremely useful styling tips that can give your bed an Insta gram able look straight off a publication’ style.
Good Quality Bedding
You get what you get in the realm of bedding, so make sure you choose the highest quality bed linen you can afford. This is the same for quality, filled bedding. It is not only important that your bed looks nice, but the quality of your bedding is essential to getting a good night’s rest and affects your mood for the remainder of the day,” Lucy Ackroyd, Head of Design at Christy and tells us.
To achieve the fresh, clean hotel-style look, purchase pure cotton bed linen. The advantages are ten times more.
The first reason is that 100% cotton fabrics are naturally breathable and help control your temperature and moisture level, reducing the clammy sensation you get from synthetic fibers,’ Lucy explains. Additionally, high thread count materials are more comfortable against your skin. So in addition to being more comfortable, you’re less likely to feel caught up or caught in rougher fabrics that stick particularly to your evening wear.’
Reversible Duvet Covers
If you’re fond of prints or prefer changing your look regularly, it’s worth investing in a reversible cover for your duvet. It’s not just two different designs, but it also provides an appealing option to a bed when the upper part of the duvet cover is pulled down.
However, it’s not all about bright patterns and blocking patterns. People who want to achieve an elegant hotel look using a white-on-white style can still benefit from a reverse bed cover. Just keep the style simple and limit yourself to stripes, or even polka dots, and then simple neutrals to the back.
Pillow Talk
On a double bed, make sure you have two pillows per side. Be sure you fluff them before placing them on top of your duvet, with the unfurled side facing towards the outside of the bed,’ Lucy advises. Consider investing in a few pillow shams that match your bedding to improve your pillows. Set the shams of your pillow over your regular pillows, obscuring them with an elegantly coordinated façade to create a luxurious hotel appearance.’
The most frequent question in the styling of beds is whether pillows should be placed above the duvet or under it.
“When we style clothes for photo shoots or in our clients at home, we suggest one pillow under the duvet and another above. The top pillow gives the design and feel and leaves the lower pillow in place to sleep on once the duvet is removed in the morning. Georgia Metcalfe, the founder of French Bedroom, explains.
Make sure to coordinate your pillows and duvet. Nic Shacklock at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk elaborates: ‘The bottom two pillows should match your fitted bottom sheet in material and color to achieve a super cohesive bedspread. The top pillows should be matched to the duvet.’
Bed Spreads
Add texture and color to your bedroom by putting a bedspread on or two.
The bedspreads look amazing when placed with one plain and one with a pattern:
- Choose a primary color from the pattern of your bedspread and curtains for your bedroom, as well as artwork or wallcoverings. Use this color in the lower bedspread, covering your entire bedroom or the upper part.
- Lay the patterned bedspread on top, about half-width creating an ultra-thin panel over the plain. This creates a thoughtful and coordinated look that is straight from the playbook of an interior designer.
- Lay the plain bed on top.
- Throws
Throws are still a wonderful design tool for beds, but make sure they are not folded too neatly on the floor part of the mattress. Instead, throws should be more casual and casually draped on the corners.
“When adding blankets and throws to the mattress, the goal is to create soft and textural layers. The loosely draped middle on the bed is where I feel it strikes a balance between sleek styling and casual design”, says Shelley Cochrane, Retail Merchandiser at Furniture Village. I love choosing crepe fabrics because they provide an exquisitely soft and tactile aspect.’
Don’t limit yourself to one color; similar to a bedspread, using two throws in the mix of colors and textures is a great idea too.
Cushion Love
It is vital to layer cushions for a chic and well-presented mattress. But how many cushions, precisely?
“You should choose between three and six cushions, based on the size of the bed as well as your preference for the bed,’ says Lucy, who advises that it is best to group them by size, placing the biggest on the back, and the smaller ones in front.
Cushions can be great for removing gaps between pillows and are an excellent way to bring the entire bedroom design in one place,’ says Georgia. Select a motif, color, or design from your bedroom’s design and replicate this design in the cushion.
Think softly curving cushions with pompom detailing for bedroom designs that have a romantic feel, Mongolian sheepskin cushions for traditional, cottage-style rooms, and somewhat rough-hewn pillows for more desert-inspired homes,” Shelley adds.
The best tip: If you want to change your bedroom’s style with the seasons and are limited in storage space, an affordable alternative is to purchase cushions – check out H&M and IKEA for a wide selection of colors and designs.
How To Wash Your Pillow (Yes, You Should Be Washing Your Pillow)
If you’ve used too frequently cleaning your pillowcases and sheets, you may not focus on what’s underneath: your mattress and pillows. Both require a thorough cleaning at least once a year.
“Over time, hair, dead skin cells, sweat, and drool build up on the pillow,” says Neil Kao, MD, an allergist-immunologist in Greenville, S.C. And all that gunk is the stuff that dust mites love to munch on, which causes their population to multiply and increases your chances of having an allergic reaction to their presence.
If you’ve seen C.R.’s video on cleaning the mattress, we’re sure you’ve added this to your routine of chores for your home. Adding a pillow to the cleaning checklist will be easy by comparing it.
You may also wish to purchase a pillow protector to keep some of the scum out and extend the lifespan of your mattress.
In this article, C.R. helps you keep the pillow clean, fresh in good shape for a restful night’s rest. If you’re in the market for an entirely new pillow, take a look at our guide to buying a pillow or visit our pillow ratings to find out what pillows are the most the task of being fluffy.
A word of caution before cleaning: When washing pillows, check the label first. Some pillows, but not all, can be washed in the machine.
Step 1: Air It Out
Ensure your pillows get a daily brushing to help them regain their form and remove dust. Hang them outside on an outdoor clothesline every month or more for a couple of hours, preferring an overcast, sunny day. If this isn’t an option for some pillows, such as pillows made of latex and foam, you can go through the dryer on the non-heat cycle.
Step 2: Wash It Gently
“If your pillow can withstand being laundered, you should wash it at least twice a year, or quarterly if you sweat a lot, eat in bed, or have pets sleep in your bed with you,” states Melissa Homer, chief cleaning officer of Maid Pro the house-cleaning franchise located in the United States and Canada.
Washing a pillow is not difficult; however, it may take some drying time.
If your pillow is stained with an untreated stain that you’re trying to get rid of, treat the pillowcase and pillow using a stain remover that targets this kind of stain before throwing it in the washing machine. (The same technique can be used to remove stains from mattresses.)
If your washer is big enough, it is possible to take two cushions and wash them each time. This will help the load and allow the detergent and water to move more easily. Because the agitator of top-loaders is typically a challenge to use on pillows, it’s best to run the agitator on a gentle setting for just about a couple of minutes (or the shortest setting if you are unable to regulate the time). Alternatively, you can go to the laundry to use its front loaders.
Check these guidelines for the specific kinds of pillows:
* Feather or down: Most feather pillows can be washed in the washer. Make sure to use cool water and mild detergent. Dry with low heat. (High temperatures can cause damage to the down.)
* Latex or memory foam: A vigorous wash can cause the foam to break and cause it to break down, which is why these pillows may require hand washing. Clean the dust off of the pillow. Then, spot clean using a damp cloth and a tiny amount of mild detergent. The pillow should be laid flat for it to dry.
* Polyester: Wash in warm water and gentle cycle. It is recommended to use using a couple of pillows at a stretch to evenly distribute the load. Use only approximately one tablespoon of soap liquid.
* Buckwheat shells: The buckwheat filling should be poured onto the cookie sheet in a large or a wide shallow bowl. Place the buckwheat in the sun to remove odors and clean the shell’s casing with cold water and mild detergent.
Step 3: Dry It Thoroughly
It’s essential to ensure the pillow is dry, or else mildew is possible. Don’t use the auto-dry feature on your dryer’s clothes washer since the sensors only detect the surface moisture, which leaves you with a pillow still-damp interior.
Many pillows can be dry in an hour or so in moderate temperatures. Adding a few dry towels can accelerate the process. Throw in two fresh dry balls or tennis balls, and they’ll stop the filling from sticking together when they bounce around the drum.
When drying feather or down pillows, use the no-heat air-dry setting (it takes a bit) and tennis balls or dryer balls to break them into small clumps.
When the temperature is nice, you can hang most pillows on the line until they’re completely dried. Whichever method you choose for drying, looking for moisture in the pillows is important. If there isn’t any, the time is now to put it on the mattress.
We suggest using covers for your pillows to guard your pillow against stains like sweat, body oils, and facial cream. Clean both the pillow case and regular cover, for example, every week or once per week. This is in addition to your sheets.
