How to Style Floating Shelves

How to style floating shelves, including styling tips, photos, current trends, where to shop, and more.

Floating shelves are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to using higher-covered cabinets entirely. They’re frequently made of stained or painted wood. Floating shelves are more affordable than cabinets, which is one of the reasons they are so popular. They also help to break up the monotony of a row of identical cabinets. Follow these steps to install a floating shelf.

  • Step 1: Consider the structure to which you’ll be affixing the shelf. Is it on a smooth or textured surface? What’s going on beneath the drywall, if that’s the case? This is an excellent moment to use a stud finder.
  • Step 2: Think about storage capacity: how much weight can my shelf support? What am I going to put on my bookshelves? Make a list of how much weight you believe each object will require for support.
  • Step 3: Brackets tracing. Hold your shelf brackets to the wall and trace the screw holes using your marking line as a guide.
  • Step4: Know your measurements: What is the thickness, length, and depth of my shelf, and which bracket will fit it? Now that you know what the shelf will be mounted to and what it will carry, it’s time to determine the shelf and bracket dimensions.
  • Step 5: Plan to mount your shelf directly to the studs in the wall. Installing floating shelves without striking the studs is okay but it is strongly advised that you do not do so. If you don’t have studs, you’ll have to rely on extra support like wall anchors or toggle bolts.

Juxtapose

It’s not necessarily what you put on your shelves, but what you put next to them that makes a difference. The contrast between small clustered shelves and one large streamlined artwork is pleasing.

Style Floating Shelves with a Variety of Items

Approach the shelf as a whole zone, providing visible focal points (high visual moments) and areas for the eye to rest (low visual moments). The low visual moment does not have to be an empty area; white flowers or a vase with a subdued tone will suffice.

Experiment with Depth and Height

People have a bad tendency to arrange things on a shelf in a straight line. However, keep in mind that this piece of furniture is a three-dimensional object that will be seen from many angles, even if it is mounted to a wall.

Use Books to Style Floating Shelves

Books are a great way to fill up space on a long shelf. I know it sounds obvious, but using books in large quantities is a great way to fill up space on a long shelf. By stacking books vertically and horizontally, then butting the stacks up against one another to make an L-shape configuration, you can create some wonderful moments.

Summary

The possibilities are endless, but if you’re stumped on how to arrange your floating shelves, these shelf styles will undoubtedly come in handy.
